What is Personal Branding and Social Media Marketing?
Depends who you ask. But since you’re asking me, here’s my definition, and I think it’s simple: it’s choosing to define yourself to other people in a specific way. The real trick, however, is creating that definition in other people’s minds, and maintaining it. Otherwise, what you think your brand is, is not what it is. Because ultimately, your brand is defined by other’s perception of you – good or bad.

Start from the idea that your Personal Brand is the “image” that you create in other people’s minds. Through our actions and interactions with other people, we’re constantly creating an image, a brand. What do people think of when they think of you? A tenacious fighter (i.e. Hillary Rodham Clinton)? A go-getter? A sharp-dressed, but empty, suit? A responsible, upstanding, true-to-your word, person of complete integrity?

Personal Branding as a strategy is the conscious creation of a brand that represents you, and then a way to extend that brand out into the world. A Personal Branding strategist helps you do that – helps you define and articulate your critical values, and helps you present them.

Now, take it to the next level. How do you create a web presence that succesfully presents you and your brand, and enables you to monitor other’s perceptions of you and your brand, and adjust and maintain your brand? That requires a strategy. And in today’s socially-oriented internet, it really requires an integrated Social Media Marketing Strategy.
