Talking Social Media at University of Miami

with Maria De Los Angeles, Alex de Carvalho, and Carlos Miller, after speaking to social media class at University of MiamiLast night I had the honor of speaking to students of a social media class given by Alex de Carvalho at the University of Miami School of Communications.

Also speaking with me were Maria De Los Angeles and Carlos Miller.

If you’re a blogger or an aspiring blogger, Maria and Carlos are two bloggers you should check out. Both of their blogs began as personal journeys and have evolved and grown in both direction and in readership. It was quite interesting hearing the blogging experience they shared with the students.

I have hosted webinars with Maria (particularly, “Awaken The Blogger Within!) and she regularly gives workshops on blogging and writing. Stay tuned here, as I’m sure we’ll be scheduling more, and surf over to Maria’s Sex On The Beach site to learn more about her.

Carlos has been a photographer and an activist for freedom of the press for years. His blog, Photography Is Not A Crime, is a prime example of how blogging and the power of the internet enables true freedom of the press and empowers any of us with computer access to shine a light on topics that might otherwise hide in the shadows.

It was quite an honor for me to speak to a class at the University of Miami, as well as to share the experience with bloggers the caliber of Maria and Carlos.

The instructor, Alex de Carvalho, is a leader and community-builder in South Florida. It was my pleasure to be one of his invited guests.

Day 2: 30 Days of Facebook Frenzy! How To Get Email Addresses of Your Facebook Friends

Facebook tips and more by Patrick Barbanes at www.patrickbarbanes.com!It’s Day 2 of my 30 Day Facebook Frenzy!

Some social networks are pretty protective of their member’s information. Even Facebook, in a way. There, I said it. But it’s true! For example, unlike LinkedIn, which provides a way to download the information about your connections, Facebook will let you do no such thing. (To learn how to do this in LinkedIn, read my post, Saving LinkedIn Connections To Your Computer.)

So if you wanted the email addresses of all your Facebook friends, you’d be out of luck. Almost.

A friend on Twitter (@stayinginsync) reminded me of this the other day, an easy way to get a file of the email addresses of your Facebook friends out of Facebook! It’s done through Yahoo! So, to do this, you have to sign up for Yahoo (or already be signed up, of course).

Sign up for Yahoo, if you’re not already.

Then, check out this video, and the simple instructions below it:

Here’s the step-by-step, as outlined at Digital Inspiration:

The trick, as you can see in the video, is actually quite simple.

Go to address.yahoo.com and click the Facebook icon. A login dialog should pop-up, just sign-in with your Facebook credentials and within seconds, you entire Facebook address book will be available inside your Yahoo Mail Account. Once the import is done, click this link to download a CSV file with the email addresses of all your Facebook contacts to your desktop.

You can then import the CSV file into Gmail Contacts, LinkedIn, your phone address book or any of the social sites where you want to connect with your existing Facebook circle.

Update: If Yahoo! is unable to import your Facebook Address book, open your Facebook page and choose “Application Settings” under Account. Next remove the “Yahoo! Contact Importer” application from your Facebook profile and try the steps mentioned in the video again.

Pretty neat, don’t you think?

Take notes, and make LinkedIn a key part of your networking strategy!

You can find John on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/in/jnykolai and on Twitter as @CigarSPHR.
